There’s a lot that happens between the donation and the impact.
It is a sensible question that many supporters ask of a charity: after making a donation, what actually happens to that money? The Foundation is committed to stewarding every gift with transparency and care, ensuring that donor contributions have a meaningful impact.
Behind the scenes, the Foundation’s fundraising activities are guided by a commitment to donor stewardship. Every donation is received and carefully recorded, with ongoing cooperation between departments, then allocated to its intended purpose, always with the donor’s intentions in mind. For the Foundation, this process is routine, but for donors, much of it remains unseen.
To honour this trust, the Foundation aims to keep donors informed about each gift’s journey, from donation to impact.
Donations do not always come about in the same manner. Some people know precisely where they would like their gift to go; this may be because they have had a significant experience themselves, or with someone they care about, in one of the hospital’s departments such as Cancer Care, Emergency, or Maternity. If a donation is accepted for a particular purpose, the money is allocated to that purpose.
Some donors choose to give without restrictions, allowing the Foundation the flexibility to address the most urgent priorities as they arise. While these gifts may seem less personal, they are essential in meeting evolving healthcare needs and ensuring donor impact is maximized where it is needed most.
Even once a donation arrives, it doesn’t always become equipment the week after.
Medical equipment follows a specific process. Approvals, purchasing requirements, and timelines all come into play; in addition, if the equipment being bought is a certain type, installation, testing, and staff training will also be needed before somebody can use it. Sometimes everything is completed quickly, while other times it takes a great deal of time.
Donors may wonder whether a $25 contribution makes any difference, especially when the goal is to purchase an item costing $100,000.
Every contribution, regardless of size, does make a difference, especially when combined with the generosity of others.
One of the most rewarding aspects of community fundraising is seeing how these contributions combine. For example, a $25 donation may be joined by another person’s $50, a local business giving $500, the proceeds from a previous community fundraiser, and hundreds of other individual gifts. While those donors may never meet, together they enable the purchase of items funded together.
It is natural to celebrate big donations, and we ought to. Large contributions can enable extraordinary things. At the same time, however, healthcare philanthropy is built on many people donating amounts that feel comfortable to them, and the total of these donations can, in some cases, be easily underestimated.
The highlight of the process comes when the equipment arrives, the project is complete, or something new is put into use. The Foundation is dedicated to closing the loop with donors by sharing updates, photos, and stories that show the tangible results of their generosity.
Sometimes, the result is an impressive piece of technology; on other occasions, it might be a chair, a stretcher, a training device, a wheelchair, or rehabilitation equipment that is less visually striking. These items, though less dramatic, often make a significant impact for patients and staff alike.
When a piece of equipment is used, it takes on a new significance; it is no longer just an item on a list or a figure linked to a fundraising goal, but becomes something a nurse reaches for, a physician uses to assist in diagnosis, or an item that makes a patient’s experience better.
Then, where does your donation end up?
A great deal takes place between the day a donation is made and the day when its impact can be celebrated. What matters most is that every donation – large or small – becomes a vital part of someone’s care, and the Foundation remains committed to stewarding that support with transparency and gratitude.
